a roman holiday

The Eternal City deserves its name. Rome overflows with rich evidence of great empires and the city pulls you through ancient history- it's a wonderful place to start an adventure. On the day I arrived, the entire city was preparing for the upcoming parade and festivities celebrating the birth of the Republic on June 2, 1946. If you look very closely on the upper level of the Colosseum in the photo below, you can see the crew that was hanging a celebratory banner in honor of Festa Della Repubblica.

We found the public transportation reasonable enough to navigate and easily skirted about the city with the help of a cheap tourist map and an iphone app (travel tip: download free city apps that provide info about historical places and which bus or train stop to get off near). Stumbling upon the Villa Borghese Gardens and Pincian Hill near Piazza del Popolo was one of the highlights of our quick visit. If I ever call Rome home, you'll likely find me there on a daily basis.
